The Massachusetts learner's permit exam has 25 multiple-choice questions, and you pass with 18 correct in 25 minutes. It leans on alcohol misuse, suspensions and Junior Operator violations as much as on signs and rules of the road, so this set does too. Teens get the permit at 16, hold it six months with driver's education and 40 supervised hours, and take the road test at 16½.
These practice tests follow the RMV Driver's Manual chapter by chapter: obtaining your license and the JOL, safety first, keeping your license, speed, signals, signs and markings, turns, right-of-way, rotaries, passing and parking, and emergency vehicles, police stops, driving emergencies and crashes. The road-sign test shows the actual sign pictures, the way the real exam does.
Read the study guide chapter first — the guides below are written from the manual — then take the matching test. The explanation under each question gives the rule behind the answer, which is what the real exam rewords.
